Child Protection volunteer Guidelines for East Lincoln Alliance Fields marked with an * are required Child Protection Guidelines for East Lincoln Alliance Volunteers The safety of children and teens is very important at East Lincoln, so every year we have a volunteer safety training to keep everyone informed about what to do if there is a threatening situation at church. Volunteers are required to attend this training, but for those who are unable, we have this online checklist that covers the same basic information that was shared at the training. Please carefully read each section and check the box to indicate that you have read and understood it. If you have any questions, please contact Pastor Eric, Kent Tollakson, or Dell Stone. General Information As a volunteer, there are a few basic things we want you to understand about responding to incidents: 1. Be assured that we have a security team at church that is made up of people who have been trained in how to respond to various incidents. The members of this team will begin to take action if an incident occurs. 2. If an incident occurs or you become aware of something that is concerning to you, one of the first things you should do is find one of the following people and let them know what is going on: Dell Stone, Mike Deems, Bob Koenig, Jason Noel, Eric Danielson, Kent Tollakson. These people will be ready to take leadership in the situation. Be sure you know who these people are. 3. Whatever the situation is, go ahead and trust your instincts. Don’t wait and see if something bad is going to happen, take action to improve the situation. I have read and understand the General Information. * What to do if there is an Emotionally Disturbed Person. If you notice something abnormal about a person’s behavior, or if someone does or says something that indicates they could be a risk to harming themselves of someone else, don’t hesitate. Begin to take steps to improve the situation. 1. Move children/teens away from the person. Make space. You want to do things that won’t add to their distress. 2. Report the behavior to one of the leaders mentioned earlier. 3. Continue to assess the person to try to determine if they really are a threat. I have read and understand what to do in the above situation. * What to do if there is an Active Shooter or Armed Intruder If you hear a gunshot or alarming noise, or if you see someone with a gun or any kind of weapon, don’t hesitate. Begin to take the following actions. 1. Call 911 or have someone call 911. Stay on the line. It is important to get emergency responders on the move as soon as possible. 2. If possible, report the concern to one of the leaders listed above if the intruder hasn’t taken action yet, but don’t leave children/teens unsupervised to do so. 3. Assess the situation and supply resources to deal with the issue. This may include the following: a. Utilize emergency locks in classrooms. Make it difficult for an intruder to enter the room. Most doors are equipped with an emergency locking system from the inside. Be sure you are familiar with how these locks work. b. Prepare a way to get children/teens out of the room and away from harm. Go out windows. DO NOT WAIT AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS. c. Prepare to fight. If you can’t escape to safety, you may need to attack the intruder to stop or slow them down. Use anything you can as a weapon or distraction. d. If someone is seriously injured or bleeding, there is a casualty response kit in the church sound booth and a blue bag with extra supplies under the end table in Pastor Eric’s office. There are many people in the church who are familiar with how to use the supplies. I have read and understand what to do in the above situation. * What to do if there is a Fire Depending on the severity and extent of the fire, assess the situation and be ready to take the following actions as necessary. 1. Make sure children/teens are outside in a safe location. Exit through a safe door or a window if necessary. Account for all children/teens. 2. Call 911. 3. Utilize fire extinguishers which are located at every exit, kitchen, and electrical room. Become familiar with where they are located and how to use them. 4. Report the fire to one of the leaders mentioned above. I have read and understand what to do in the above situation. * What to do if there is a Medical Emergency There is a wide range of potential medical emergencies that you may need to respond to. Assess the situation and supply resources to deal with the issue. This may include the following: 1. Call 911 if necessary. 2. Report the emergency to one of the leaders listed above. 3. Utilize the First Aid Kits which are located in: a. The upright cabinet in the kitchen b. The upper cabinet in the East Wing kitchenette 4. Utilize the Emergency Defibrillator located in the Fellowship Hall. Several people in the church are trained to know how to use this. The machine itself will also give instructions when it is turned on. I have read and understand what to do in the above situation. * Type Name, First and Last * Date * If you are a human seeing this field, please leave it empty.
